What is community participation?

Community participation support helps a person take part in life outside the home, social and recreational activities, building skills, and connecting with others. It is funded through the NDIS and shaped entirely around what the person enjoys and wants to work towards.

Community participation in practice at MY DSP

Why MY DSP

What makes our community participation different

  • Small groups or one-to-one

Whatever feels comfortable, the buzz of a small group, or steady one-to-one support to begin with.

  • Out in real community settings

Local shops, cafés, clubs, classes and events, being part of the community, not just visiting a centre.

  • Builds confidence and skills

Every outing is a chance to grow independence, communication and the confidence to do more.

  • Led by the person

We follow each person’s own interests and pace, never a fixed timetable they have to fit into.

In practice

What community participation can look like

  • Joining a local art, music or sports group
  • Weekly coffee or lunch catch-ups with friends
  • Volunteering at a community garden or charity
  • Learning to use public transport with confidence
  • Attending local events, markets and festivals
  • Trying a new hobby, class or interest
